The BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab is pleased to present our 5th annual Rotman Online Trading Competition (ROTC). This competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Toronto (St. George, Mississauga and Scarborough campus). Students will participate in teams of 2 and trade three different cases. The competition will take place online on November 20th, 2016. Top 3 performing teams (6 students in total) will be invited to form the University of Toronto Team at the Rotman International Trading Competition 2017, which will take place from Thursday February 23rd to Saturday February 25th, 2017.

Attention: There has been a change made to the competition date. The new date is Sunday Nov.20th, 2016 instead of Nov.19th.


  1. Registration period: September 30th, 2016 - November 5th, 2016
  2. You have to register in teams of 2 people in order to participate; we will not accept registrations from individual students. Only one member needs to register for the team.
  3. Register at the following link: ROTC Registration 
  4. You will receive an email when the competition case package and the practice servers are made available.
  5. You will receive an email 1-2 days before the competition begins with your username and password that will allow you to log-in to the correct RIT server being used for the competition. Please do not lose this information as you will not be able to compete without it. Our Lab staff cannot assure that username and password are retrieved/reset in case someone loses them.


Rotman Online Trading Competition will be executed using the RIT Software. For traders/competitors who are unfamiliar with this software, the RIT's official website gives detailed instructions and allows you to download RIT onto your computer.  On the RIT website you will find a demo of the software as well as tutorial videos.

The competition is held online, it will start at 10:00am on Sunday November 20th and end at around 3pm. The competition will be run until the number of subheats described in the ROTC Case Package document is completed.


There is no registration fee. Traders/competitors are required to use their own computers during the competition. Since this is an online competition, internet speed can affect your performance. Each participant is responsible for ensuring the internet connection and stability of the workstation. The Rotman Finance Lab is not responsible for any network crash or for performance resulting from a competitor’s poor internet connection.
